Why Is It Called Vibe Coding? The Origin and Meaning Explained
Vibe coding is a term coined by AI researcher Andrej Karpathy in early 2025. It describes the practice of building software by describing what you want in natural language and letting AI write all the code — you stay in the mindset of the product, not the implementation. The name captures the feeling: you go with the vibe, not the syntax.
The origin of the term
Andrej Karpathy — co-founder of OpenAI and former Tesla AI director — posted about vibe coding on X in February 2025. He described a workflow where he would describe what he wanted to build, the AI would generate the code, he would run it, fix errors by pasting them back into the AI, and ship working software without understanding most of the implementation. The term resonated immediately because it named something developers were already doing but had no word for.
Why the name works
The word vibe captures the shift from precise engineering to product intuition. Traditional coding requires syntax, logic, and implementation knowledge. Vibe coding replaces most of that with intent — you describe the vibe of what you want and the AI handles the mechanics. Karpathy's original framing was deliberately casual: you relax your mind, you stop trying to understand every line, and the AI fills in the gaps.
What vibe coding means in 2026
Vibe coding in 2026 means: give an AI tool (Lovable, Cursor, Claude Code, etc.) a plain-English description of what you want built, and it generates, edits, and deploys the code.
